In response to the International Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro1992), Botania, the Botanic Garden of the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, supplies seeds to other botanical gardens and research institutions on the basis:
• The seeds are used for the common good in the areas of research, education, conservation and the development of botanical gardens.
• That permission must be sought from Botania if the recipient seeks to commercialise either the genetic material, its products or research derived from it. Such commercialisation will be subject to the conditions of a separate agreement.
• The genetic material, its product or research derived from it are not passed to a third party for commercialisation without permission from Botania.
• Under the Convention (especially Article 15), we point out explicitly, that any commercial use of the seeds comes under the jurisdiction of protection from the appropriate rights of the country of origin.
By ordering seeds or other plant material from Botania, the recipient agrees completely with the conditions above.
We further request that publications resulting from the use of plant material supplied by Botania, acknowledge this institute as the supplier, and that we receive a reprint of the publication.
